Meeting Minutes for October 6, 2009

Attendees:

Chair: Ellyn Lester (Communications Committee)
Katia Hansen (RE co-chair, CUUPs)

Rev. Beth Johnson (Liaison between Board and C-CAT, Sunday Services Committee)
Samantha Marlowe (Committee on Ministry)

Lisa Wellens (RE Director)
Eileen Maurer (Minute-taker, Hospitality Team, Youth Advisor)

Next Meeting: November 3 at 6:30

Decide on flagpole details for auction.

  • Action items as bullets

Two people are interested in the Social Action Council. Rev. Beth conceives of a three-person council. The three people on the council wouldn’t have to do all the social action work, but they would coordinate, publicize, organize, administrate, etc. Rev. Beth would also like to have a “listening campaign” where members of the congregation would be interviewed about their ideas for social action at Palomar Fellowship.

Ellyn asked each person on the C-CAT what they would like to see addressed this year:

Barb and Lisa want to affirm sharing information through the Council works.

Susan reports that the Green Team is meeting every other month.

The committee just sponsored a star-gazing event.

Barb said 16 people showed up at the Firefly tv series showing.

Samantha reported that the congregational survey is online and 70 people have already completed their survey.

Rev. Beth reminded everyone that there are Gifts Ministry sessions scheduled. The November Council meeting will be a Gifts Ministry session for us. Yeah! Keep in mind that the meeting may run past 8:00 for November.

Rev. Beth let the Council know that the Committee on Ministry will be carrying out a covenanting process for the congregation in February. She wants the Council to be positive and supportive of that.

Eileen reported that we may need to think about paying someone $10 per hour to work refreshments on Sunday. She is not getting good results trying to get volunteers to be on weekly teams. Katia suggested that people who work in the kitchen need more recognition. Samantha suggested that we form a committee that would be in charge of Hospitality (rather than just two people as it is now).

  • Eileen will ask Bob, could we run three dishwashers at once with our current electrical setup?
  • Susan Thayer will send an email out to her group of greenies asking “What is the environmental tradeoff between water, electricity, bio-degradable paper, etc.”
  • Eileen will come up with a job description for the kitchen work.

Rev. Beth would also like to think about paying someone to get the sanctuary ready every Sunday (setting up chairs, sweeping, etc.).

Katia said that we can pay $200 per year for unlimited access to Survey Monkey. Then any committee could use it to find out quick things that would be useful for them. Communications, Growth, RE, Music, Hospitality, Membership, Sunday Service, and Yoga have all agreed to pony up $20.

Communications is in the process of designing portable information boards for the patio. We have two architects working on this project!

Deadline for auction items is October 16. Basket assembly party at Ann Kay’s house on October 17 at 3:00.

Gloria Millikin reported that the attendance at the last concert was low. The Council discussed whether or not Saturday afternoon is a good time for families. Maybe an evening concert (with childcare offered) would be a better time for more people.

Katia reported that two new members have agreed to come on the RE committee (Jed Arrogante, Per Corbeil). The committee is really getting organized including yahoo group, working on safety policies, teacher trainings,

Friday, October 9 at 7:00 pm there will be a showing of the Van Jones Ware lecture at General Assembly.

The Sunday Service committee would like to erect a permanent flagpole in order to make it easier to fly the rainbow flag (and the American flag and Earth flag). Bob Kintz found the flagpole would cost $150. This could be an auction item and the person’s name would be on the flagpole. Maybe we could get a bigger one or buy two smaller ones for either side of the driveway.

  • Barb will talk to Bob and research the cost of a bigger pole.

Katia wants all of us to think about what kind of detailed analysis our committees would like to retrieve from the survey data.

Here are some blackout dates we want to keep reserved (but there may be others):
Equinoxes and Solstices (decided by Sacred Circle)
Saturday before Halloween
Sunday afternoon before Labor Day / Memorial Day and the morning of Labor Day / Memorial Day
New Year's Eve
Christmas Eve
Saturday after Thanksgiving

Budget reminder:
$200 for survey monkey
$200 for pictorial directory (two years from now)
